The prom may come in April or May, but shopping for Prom dresses starts much sooner. Actually, looking for prom dresses starts long before one ever secures a date, but at that point, it’s just recreational shopping. Once one has an actual invite to the biggest dance and event of the year, shopping begins in earnest and the hunt is on.
The prom is the Academy Awards of high school and as such, is occasion to show off for the red carpet. Individual style plays an important part in the decision to go with short dresses or go dramatic with a long more formal gown. While some students choose to spend more on their prom dress than many do on a wedding dress, still others go chic and trendy, spending less money on their dresses at consignment and thrift stores. It’s just a matter of personal taste. But somewhere in the middle, in a department store or online, is where most girls find the dress in which to dance the night away.
So what trends are developing for the prom dresses 2011? Bright colors are popping out everywhere. Bright yellows, coral pinks and jewel toned purples are all the rage for the spring formal. Black and white formal dresses never go out of style, so if you’re a traditional and prefer the clean cut look, you’re sure to shine at the prom this year. Latin influences can be seen on many of the styles as the ruffles and high cutting hem line expose the legs for the salsa type dances. While the dress may be long, many of the styles expose just as much leg as the short dresses will. So, if you have the legs, flaunt them.
The best advice you can get is to shop early. If you’re not a traditional size, find the style you want and have your dress custom made with plenty of time to spare. Do your recreational shopping so that you know the styles that look good on you and enjoy trying on the various styles to experiment with different looks. Don’t be afraid to go bold as what better time to do it than your high school years?
