Ten Suggested Supplements for Diabetes

Diabetes mellitus happens when insulin is not utilized well to decrease your blood glucose or your blood sugar. This may sound simple but in reality, having this disorder may lead you to a lot of serious health complications such as organ failure, blindness or stroke. There are two types of diabetes, type 1 and type 2 where type 1 is more or less hereditary in origin while type 2 is caused by one’s sedentary lifestyle.

This particular disorder doesn’t have a cure yet but type 1 is controlled by  receiving insulin while type 2 can be controlled by diet and a more active lifestyle. And now, while scientists still search for a possible cure, supplements for diabetes are used by most patients for now so their disorder would not come to worse.

There are many available nutritional supplements for diabetes and among those, here are some of the supplements you may consider for yourself if you are a diabetic or to your loved one you know who’s suffering this disease.

Gurmar (Gymnema sylvestre), bitter melon (Momordica charantia), prickly-pear cactus (Opuntia spp) and ginseng (Panax ginseng) are plant-derived supplements which act differently but all are found to be helpful in lowering one’s blood sugar level. Gurmar is also known as the “sugar destroyer” and said to be a powerful and effective herb to control one’s blood sugar while on the other hand, bitter melon shows that though it only has a slight effect in lowering the blood sugar, its consistency in action becomes the factor for this to be also considered by many patients.

Prickly pear cactus on the other hand is said to contain a substance which is similar to insulin, the hormone which one lacks or not working well if inflicted with this health problem and as for ginseng, this also provides different actions so that the body may fight well with the conditions brought by disorder.

Aside from these, you may consider these nutrient supplements that contain the Hawthorn Berry which are said to be helpful in controlling one’s diabetes: magnesium, gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), chromium, alpha-lipoic acid (ALA), coenzyme Q10, and carnitine. People who are diabetic tend to have decreased amounts of magnesium and chromium in the body so taking this may help one person from developing further complications related to mineral deficiency.

Also, aside from lowering blood sugar, having GLA and ALA in the body may be helpful as they could reduce diabetes related nerve pain. Coenzyme Q10 reduces the risk of having the complication, diabetic retinopathy while Carnitine on the other hand is helpful to reduce the body fats in a diabetic patient to prevent one from developing diabetic acidosis which is another complication one gets from diabetes.

These are the ten supplements for diabetes that you may consider to help a diabetes patient prevent him/herself from experiencing more health complications due to this disorder. But before you get yourself overwhelmed by the number of herbal supplements that could help you or your loved one, make sure to consult first to your doctor or any expert on what they have to say about the supplement you’re planning to take for you or for your loved one.

Perhaps, for now there is no cure yet for this disorder but alongside with the supplement, with one’s proper attitude and self-discipline, such traits will be greatly helpful to counteract the harm brought by such disorder.
